1st Human Case Of West Nile Virus Reported In Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. -- State health officials said Monday that they have confirmed the first human with West Nile virus this year in Wisconsin.It was in a woman from Portage County who developed fever, headache, muscle and joint aches, nausea, vomiting, rash, and fatigue.She has fully recovered from the illness without requiring hospitalization.
West Nile virus has been found in 92 birds in 44 Wisconsin counties this year. Three horses have also tested positive.State Epidemiologist Mark Sotir reminded people to use mosquito repellant, avoid being outside at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active, and eliminate standing water where they can breed.Symptoms may begin between three to 15 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.Dead birds should be reported to the West Nile virus hotline at 800-433-1610.
