MADISON, Wis. -- A state Senate committee is expected to decide Wednesday whether to approve a plan to allow pharmacists to refuse to fill birth control prescriptions because of their moral beliefs.Lawmakers Tuesday heard from both sides in Madison about the so-called "conscience clause" for pharmacists. The hearing came two weeks after a 12 News investigation first told you about a Milwaukee woman who said she was denied emergency contraception by a pharmacist.
"Convenience should not trump conscience in this country. We do have a First Amendment guaranteeing the free exercise of religion. We have a liberty of conscience provision on our state constitution," said Matt Sande of Pro-Life Wisconsin."When a woman goes to her local pharmacy, she does not anticipate that she must prepare for an emotional battle. She does not anticipate that she may face moral ridicule and judgment or public embarrassment and humiliation," attorney Tricia Knight said. Gov. Jim Doyle has vowed to veto the bill.
